Alkyd resin can be manufactured by melt polycondensation or solution polycondensation. The melting method involves heating
glycerol, phthalic anhydride, fatty acids, or oil in an inert atmosphere to a temperature above 200 ° C, until the acid value meets
the requirements, and then diluting with solvent. Solution polycondensation is a reaction in solvents such as xylene, which is
both a solvent and an azeotropic liquid with water, which can increase the reaction rate. The reaction temperature is lower than
that of melt polycondensation, and the product color is lighter. The performance of resins varies with the structure of fatty acids
or oils. Due to its easy availability of raw materials, low cost, good performance, and wide range of applications, it is one of the
largest synthetic resins in the paint industry. However, alkyd resins have shortcomings in terms of water resistance, weather
resistance, etc., and are generally not used outdoors for more than 3 years. The combination of alkyd resin and silicone resin
(silicone modified alkyd) is the most effective way to overcome the above shortcomings and enhance chemical stability. Organic
silicon modified alkyd resin coating not only retains the advantages of curing at room temperature and good physical and
mechanical properties and usability of the coating film, but also has the characteristics of heat resistance, UV aging resistance,
protective luster, and water resistance of organic silicon resin. It is a coating with excellent comprehensive performance. Although
the cost has increased, it can be used in fertilizer production equipment, such as steel storage tanks, pipelines in reactors, and
stairs, with a service life of over 15 years. The service life is more than 5 times that of the original alkyd resin. The performance
of organic silicon and alkyd resin co shrink varnish is better than that of the two cold mix paints, reducing maintenance and labor
costs, and has good economic benefits.
