The molecular weight of PEG-8 dimethiconehas a great impact on the properties of the compound as well as the wettabilityand irritation. Wettability is a key, but often neglected aspect of cosmeticformulations. If you put something in the air, applied to the skin, pigmentsand any other surface, the degree of wetting of the surface is critical to theefficacy of the formulation. For products that function correctly, it isnecessary to add low concentrations of silicone wetting agents.
With the same amount of PEG, the molecularweight of the silicone compound increases, the product changes from a wettingagent to an emulsifying agent, then to a conditioning agent, and finally to awater repellent. This change is the direct result of the lowest free energyconformation or form, and if it is a molecule in water, it is related to theease of rotation around the molecular backbone.
