The silicone polymer is a polymer compoundhaving a silicon atom in its main chain. At present the most importantorganosilicon polymer is polysiloxane. Polysiloxanes are polymeric, chain-like,cyclic or reticular polymeric compounds that are polymerized from many monomerscontaining double bonds, commonly known as silicones. Its structure ischaracterized by containing a silicon, oxygen atoms alternately arranged in thebasic skeleton, each silicon atoms are connected with organic groups. Thesilicon-oxygen bond in the polysiloxane has high stability. In commerciallyavailable silicones, the organic groups are methyl, longer alkyl, fluoroalkyl,phenyl, vinyl, and some other groups. These polymers are high temperature andlow temperature, waterproof, moisture-proof, chemical stability, and excellentdielectric properties. For example, silicone rubber, silicone resin, siliconeoil, silicon paint can be used as high-grade lubricants, advanced insulatingmaterials, fabric waterproofing agent, release agent, polish, defoamer.
Some organosilicon compounds can also beused as organic synthesis reagents, such as hydrosilylation reagents.
